Much of the discussion around artificial intelligence focuses on automation and productivity. AI can summarise reports, analyse large volumes of information, draft documents and identify patterns in seconds.
However, the most significant benefit is rarely measured in minutes saved.
When professionals spend less time on repetitive administrative work, they gain more time for analysis, collaboration and informed judgement. AI generates suggestions. People remain responsible for quality, priorities and final decisions.
Public sector organisations provide a good example. A policy review or procurement may involve hundreds of pages of legislation, internal policies, previous decisions and consultation responses. AI can quickly identify relevant material and prepare a structured first draft. The responsible professional can then concentrate on legal considerations, stakeholder dialogue and assessing consequences.
The same principle applies to management consulting. During an organisational review of a property management function, AI can help organise interview notes, structure documentation and identify recurring themes across multiple sources. This not only reduces manual effort but also improves the likelihood of identifying underlying issues that deserve management attention.
Technology alone is not enough, however.
Successful organisations establish clear governance for AI. They define which activities can be supported by AI, which always require human review and how information is validated before decisions are made. Governance creates trust, consistency and accountability.
Another lesson is that successful AI initiatives rarely begin with ambitious transformation programmes. They start with practical questions. How can decision-making become more consistent? How can administrative work be reduced? How can professionals spend more time on activities that create value?
When the business problem is clear, the value of AI becomes measurable.
AI should therefore not primarily be viewed as a tool for working faster. It is a tool for improving decisions, strengthening professional work and creating greater value for customers, citizens and organisations.
